Tempe is Arizona's fifth largest city, with a population of over 170,000, spanning a 39.8 square mile area. It is strategically located just seven miles southeast of downtown Phoenix, adjoining the cities of Scottsdale to the north, Mesa to the east, Chandler to the south and Phoenix to the west and is only a 10-15 minute drive from Sky Harbor International Airport. It has access to all the major freeways: the Loop 101, 202, I-10 and the US 60.
It combines high tech business, residential and resort communities, waterfront properties, golfcourse living, horse properties and gated communities, but retains the small town atmosphere of the ASU college community.
It is a highly desirable area to raise your family.
Tempe has the highest concentration of high-tech firms in the state, with over 750 companies, including Motorola, Honeywell, Freescale Semiconductor and Medtronic MicroRel. Arizona State University, the nation's fourth largest single campus university has an enrollment of over 49,000 with twelve colleges offering undergraduate degree programs in 82 majors, master's programs in 95 majors, 48 doctoral programs and a law degree program.
Tempe is home to Arizona State University's Sun Devils. Tempe is considered a premier entertainment center with a wide variety of restaurants, shopping, movies and hotels, as well as being the site for the Spring and Fall Festival of the Arts each year.
Tempe's pride, the Rio Salado Project, extends 5.5 miles and features the 220 acre Tempe Town Lake, filled in 1999 and formed from the dry bed of the Salt River, providing the largest usable body of water available to the largest population in Arizona.
The main gathering point at the lake is the twenty five acre Tempe Beach Park that plays hosts to wonderful Fouth of July celebrations and the famous New Years Eve Tempe Block Party. There are large sand play areas and a 5,000 seat grassy lawn that can be used for open play, boat watching or as a concert amphitheater.
Tempe condos are a popular option with many new projects under construction that overlook Tempe Townlake and offer spectacular views.
